This policy explains how Steve McKnight (“we”, “us”) handles personal information collected through stevemcknight.com. We aim to handle it in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
What we collect
- Contact form. Your name, email address, the topic you choose and your message, plus the date and the country your connection comes from.
- Analytics. Google Analytics uses cookies to record how the site is used, such as pages viewed, approximate location, device and browser type, and how you arrived. We look at this in aggregate, not to identify you, and Google's advertising features are switched off.
- Technical data. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) for security and reliability. The contact form also uses your IP address briefly to block spam. We don't store it.
- Preferences. Your light or dark theme choice is saved in your own browser and never sent to us.
How we use it
We use this information to read and, where possible, reply to your message; to send a one-off email confirming it arrived; to understand and improve the site; and to protect it from spam and abuse.
We don't sell or rent personal information, and contacting us doesn't add you to any mailing list.
Who we share it with
Only the service providers that help run the site: Vercel (hosting), Resend (email delivery), our email provider, and Google (analytics and web fonts). These providers may store or process information in the United States and other countries. We may also disclose information where the law requires or allows it.
Cookies
Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser. It doesn't run at all if your device is set to a European time zone, or if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, and it sets no cookies for visitors Google locates in the EU, UK or Switzerland. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, or use Google's opt-out add-on. The site works fine without them.
Other websites
We link to sites such as Amazon, PropertyInvesting.com and sogif.au. They have their own privacy policies, and Amazon may use cookies to track purchases made through our book links.
Security and retention
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information and keep messages only as long as we need them. No method of sending information over the internet is completely secure, so please don't include sensitive details, such as health or financial account information, in your message.
Access, correction and complaints
You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by using the contact form and choosing “Privacy request”. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
